Human Trafficking

WOW, what a year it has been…….Not only did we have to persevere through the pandemic but a lot of other challenges arise from all that is going on all over the world.
For those still standing….Please congratulate yourself!
For those barely standing….Please push through as you have come so far!
If these times have taught me anything , it would be that time is so precious and short that I would like to encourage you to DO MORE OF WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY!!!!!
 
On a serious note I would like to discuss a topic in this newsletter that had me boiling with anger, crying with sadness and rejoicing at the knowledge that can be applied.

HUMAN TRAFFICKING
New research from Dr Rebecca Walker who is a research Associate at the centre for migration and society at Wits, have come to light that although human trafficking happens worldwide and we cannot ignore that South Africa is considered a source, transit and destination country for human trafficking. SA is considered to be on the “Tier2 Watch list” for human trafficking. Tier 2 presents countries whose government do not fully comply with Trafficking Victims Protection act (TVPA)’s minimum standards but making significant efforts to bring themselves into compliance with those standards.

Most victims of human trafficking are exploited for forced labour. Girls are more likely to be trafficked for sexual exploitation and domestic servitude. Boys are more likely to be trafficked for street vending, food service and agricultural purposes.  
Forced labour is SA’s most prevalent form of trafficking, with more than 20% of victims being exploited in this way. Shelters for victims are also one of the biggest obstacles, with only one providing exclusive care for trafficking victims. Ukuthwala (child Marriage) also account for some trafficking victims.
 
According to child slavery index report released in 2018, there were an estimated 155 000 people living in modern slavery in SA. The non-profit organizations trying to assist follow the 3 R’s mission where ever they can and we would like to ask you to assist where you can.
1. R – Reach
Try to conduct awareness, getting knowledge on identifying trafficking in their sphere and reach out
2. R – Rescue
Familiarize yourself with resource lines that operate nationally to connect any caller with service or information they may need regarding human trafficking. Whether it is a tip off for something as a concerned onlooker or helping a victim to call themselves
3. R – Restore
Walk a road with a survivor personally in co-operation with the associations that you affiliate your selve with to ensure that they are not vulnerable to re trafficking and help equip them with skills and other opportunities to take their lives forward.
